Who wrote this — and why you should still trust it. This guide is published by ProAxis Tax & Accounting Services, a licensed CPA firm in New Jersey. Yes, we include ourselves. Here is the deal we make with you. Every firm below is real. Each was verified against its own public materials on July 31, 2026. Each is described using only what that firm publishes about itself. We tell you who each firm is best for — including when that is not us. No firm paid to be listed.
Search “best CPA in NJ” and you get directories, ads, and rankings built on firm size. Those rankings are led by national practices with hundreds of in-state CPAs.
That is useful if you are a public company. It is close to useless if you run a business with eight employees.
This guide is for the other group. It compares New Jersey firms that actually serve small and mid-size companies, organized by region, so you can find one near your work and your industry.
Who this guide is for
We drew the line at businesses that are owner-operated or owner-led. In practice that means:
- Revenue roughly between $250,000 and $25 million
- One to a few hundred employees
- An owner or small leadership team making the financial decisions
- No audit committee, and usually no requirement for audited statements
If that describes you, size rankings are the wrong tool. Fit is the right one.
How we chose
- Verified, current information. Every firm’s name, offices, and stated focus were checked against its own website on July 31, 2026. One firm we originally shortlisted had been acquired and is no longer independent, so we removed it.
- Small and mid-size focus. Each firm below publicly serves this segment. Firms built mainly for large-company assurance were moved to a separate section.
- Regional coverage. Central Jersey, Mercer, the Shore, and South Jersey are all represented.
- Fit disclosure. For each firm we say who it suits, and who should look elsewhere.
- Verifiable claims. Anything stated here can be checked on the firm’s own site.
We did not rank by size or revenue. Bigger is not better when you are the smallest client.

ProAxis is a licensed CPA firm in New Jersey and New York. It is built around one idea. Your bookkeeping, tax prep, and tax planning should live in one place, year-round.
The firm is 100% virtual with a secure client portal, so it serves all 21 counties equally. It also publishes its bookkeeping pricing ranges openly. Most firms do not.
Focus areas include NJ BAIT elections, multi-state NJ/NY filing, real estate investors, medical and dental practices, and e-commerce sellers.
Choose ProAxis if: you want quarterly planning instead of a once-a-year filing, and you would rather not coordinate a separate bookkeeper and tax preparer. Look elsewhere if: you need audited financial statements or a formal valuation. See the outgrown-this-list section below.
2. The Curchin Group, LLC — best for Shore family businesses and hospitality
The Curchin Group is at 200 Schulz Drive in Red Bank. It states it has served Monmouth County since 1955.

4. Rosenberg Rich Baker Berman — best for mid-size companies that outgrew a small practice
Rosenberg Rich Baker Berman, P.A. operates five New Jersey offices: Somerset, Union, Clark, Wall, and Martinsville. The firm states over 60 years of service.
Its own positioning is the clearest statement of the mid-size gap. The firm describes having “the expertise and resources of a much larger firm” alongside “relationship-based service usually found in smaller firms.”
Published services include:
- Audit and assurance
- Tax planning and preparation
- Business advisory and mergers and acquisitions
- Estate, trust, and international tax
- SEC and public company services
- Payroll
Choose RRBB if: you are past the small-business stage and need audit or M&A capability without moving to a national practice.
5. Wilkin & Guttenplan, P.C. — best for closely held businesses and healthcare practices
Wilkin & Guttenplan is at 1200 Tices Lane in East Brunswick. Its published industry list is specific rather than generic, which is a good sign.
Named specialties include closely held businesses, community associations, healthcare professionals and practices, real estate, life sciences and pharma, and professional athletes.
Published services span tax, audit and assurance, business valuation, litigation support, and outsourced CFO or controller work.
Choose Wilkin & Guttenplan if: you run a medical practice or a closely held business in Middlesex County, or you sit on a condo or HOA board.
6. Klatzkin & Company LLP — best for Mercer County manufacturing and construction
Klatzkin & Company is at 1 AAA Drive in Hamilton. The firm states it serves organizations and high-net-worth individuals in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. That fits businesses operating across the Trenton and Bucks County line.

Its three published service lines are advisory (client accounting and advisory services), audit, and tax.
Choose HFA if: you are a contractor or professional-services business in Ocean or Monmouth County and want client accounting services bundled with tax.
When you have outgrown this list
Some businesses genuinely need a larger firm. The clearest signals are a bank or investor requiring audited financial statements, a transaction needing a formal valuation, or reporting across many states.
Two New Jersey firms verified in our research fit that brief:
- Withum — 309 CPAs in New Jersey per NJBIZ’s 2026 ranking by in-state CPA count, with offices in Princeton, Whippany, East Brunswick, Saddle Brook, and Red Bank. Published service lines include assurance and accounting, business advisory, forensic and valuation services, risk advisory, and tax.
- Nisivoccia LLP — offices in Mt. Arlington and Bridgewater, over 55 years in operation, and a stated focus on governmental entities and not-for-profits. The firm says it serves over 350 not-for-profit organizations.
One caution before you switch. If a lender asks for a “review” or a “compilation” rather than an audit, you probably do not need to move firms. Ask which one they actually require. The three differ a lot in cost.
What to actually ask on the call
Region and specialty narrow the list. The final decision comes from five questions.
- Who will actually work on my account — a partner, or a first-year staffer?
- What is included in the monthly fee, and what gets billed separately?
- How do you handle the NJ BAIT election and multi-state filings?
- What is your response time in March and April?
- Will you put a fixed fee in writing before we start?

Frequently asked questions
Who is the best CPA in NJ for a small business?
There is no single best CPA for every small business in New Jersey. The right answer depends on your revenue, your industry, and your region. ProAxis Tax & Accounting Services serves owner-operated businesses that want bookkeeping, tax prep, and planning handled by one firm. The firm works statewide and is 100% virtual. For a South Jersey business, Alloy Silverstein has served the region since 1959. For a Monmouth County family business or restaurant group, The Curchin Group focuses on small and mid-sized companies. Match the firm to your size and industry. Disclosure: this guide is published by ProAxis, and the criteria are stated openly on this page.
How much does a small business CPA cost in New Jersey?
Fees vary by service and complexity. A business return for an S-Corp, LLC, or partnership typically runs $800 to $3,000 or more. Monthly bookkeeping scales with revenue. A solo operator typically runs $300 to $500. A business under $500,000 in revenue typically runs $400 to $700. A business between $500,000 and $2 million typically runs $700 to $1,400. Multi-entity or complex businesses typically run $1,800 to $4,000 or more. These are typical published ranges, not an offer. Final fees are scoped during an engagement.
When should a small business switch from a bookkeeper to a CPA firm?
The common trigger points are crossing roughly $250,000 to $500,000 in revenue, electing S-Corp status, or hiring your first employees. Operating in more than one state is another trigger. At that point tax planning, payroll compliance, and clean books start interacting with each other. A CPA-supervised setup catches issues a standalone bookkeeper is not licensed or trained to flag. If two or more of those triggers already apply to you, you are past the switch point.
Does my CPA need to be local to my New Jersey town?
No. Every CPA licensed in New Jersey holds the same license and the same obligations, whether the office is in Hackensack or Cherry Hill. Returns are filed electronically and records move through secure portals. What matters more is whether the firm knows your specific issues, such as the NJ BAIT election, NJ and NY multi-state filing, or your industry. Choose on expertise and responsiveness, not on driving distance.
What is the difference between a small-business CPA and a large regional firm?
Large regional firms carry the depth required for audited financial statements, formal business valuations, and complex multi-state or public-company reporting. They also carry higher minimums, and a small business is often the smallest account in the room. Smaller and virtual firms usually offer more direct partner contact, faster response times, and lower minimums, but may not perform audits in house. If a bank or investor is requiring audited statements, you need the larger firm. Otherwise you usually do not.
